Located in the eastern region of Kentucky, Elliott County's topography ranges from flat to sloping to steep hills. The population in 2000 was 6,748. The county is small, encompassing 233.96 square miles, with an average of 28.8 people per sq. mile
The county seat, the only town in the county and hometown of the late country singer Keith Whitley, is Sandy Hook which is located at the intersection of Route 7 and Route 32 on a bend of the Little Sandy River. Elliott County is known for the beauty found in its lush hills and the cliff formations along the Little Sandy River and other local streams. Much of its unique beauty is preserved in the Laurel Gorge area of the county now overseen and protected by the Laurel Gorge Cultural and Heritage Center. The Little Sandy River is the main headwater of Grayson Lake which offers a convenient campground, hiking trails, and Hidden Cove Golf Course. The county also enjoys easy access to Cave Run Lake and Yatesville Lake. The main roads in the county are State Route 32 and State Route 7. State Route 7 north gives access to Interstate 64.
The main occupations in Elliott County are pipefitting, construction, trucking, education, service industry positions, nursing, and agriculture. With the opening of the Eastern Kentucky Correctional Complex several new positions have become available. Another large empolyer is Eastern Kentucky Correctional Complex in West Liberty, KY.
The youth of Elliott County enjoy the privilege of a good school system overseen by the Elliott County Board of Education which manages Elliott County High School, Sandy Hook Elementary, Isonville Elementary, and Lakeside Elementary. There is also a private school, Infinite Possibilities Christian Academy. Our graduates further their education primairly at Morehead State University, Ashland Community and Technical College, Rowan County Technical School, and Kentucky Christian University
Our elderly are served by the Elliott County Senior Citizens Center and the prize winning Elliott County Rehabilitation and Nursing Center. The county receives excellent service from the Citico Fire Department and Ambulance Service. The medical needs of the county are served by St. Claire Medical Clinic and the Elliott County Health Department. Women in crisis are given protection and educational possibilities at Sarah' Place. Citizens in need of help with routine expenses, food, etc. are helped by the Elliott County Christian Community Center. The literary needs of the county are served by the Rocky J. Adkins Library.
Annually, during Labor Day Weekend, the county celebrates its heritage with the Elliott County School Fair, a time of homecoming and demonstration of school and agricultural accomplishments. The streets of the city are closed to traffic and opened to a parade, visitation with friends, music, dancing, craft booths, and food booths.
